Robin driving Red Sunset at WIS show

David and Robin would like to give you a brief introduction...

David’s degree is in Power Engineering where after he worked in Nuclear Power.
Robin, always a little horse crazy took UW Madison Equine Courses in High school, attended Nicolet College, and Cleveland Technical College for the Equine Management Program.

After completing college in 1985 they found and purchased a parcel of vacant land on which to build their farm. They called their farm “Cyder Bay Farm” after Robin’s first horse that she purchased at age 14. He was a registered 6-month-old bay morgan gelding with a big star on his forehead named Pittridge Cyclops, aka Cyder.

Robin now tells her story.
At that time my dream was to be a breeder of Morgan show horses!
An opportunity came when Kohler Stables (a Prestigious Morgan breeder) announced their Select auction. It was very upscale with waitresses serving champagne, “A stage” with sparkling stage mulch, multiple TV views of each lot with revolving video playing while we viewing the animals on stage. I recall a younger stallion bringing $175,000.00. It was very exciting to attend such a prestigious event at that time!

We selected a 3-year-old mare named HVK Rare Vintage. (Left) She was a Vigil March daughter with old traditional bloodlines.
“We only to take out a small loan to purchase her”.

Immediately, I started researching for a sire to compliment Vintage using artificial insemination.

MorganChantilly

Vintage’s first foal was a sensational filly we named Cyder Bay Chantilly Lace. Lacy earned futurity and other championships in halter starting as a yearling and 2-year-old.
As a 3-year-old Lacy earned her place to enter the World Morgan show.
Lacy won reserve World Champion under park harness and third place World contender under park saddle.
Lacy was gorgeous and after the world show she was sold to a farm in Alabama.

Vintage had a total of three foals. The second filly born was named Cyder Bay Eclipse, a lovely western type mare who went on to be a brood mare to a breeding farm near St. Louis MO.  Not Pictured

Her third foal (Left) was a colt who we named Cyder Bay Chicago Flame. He had dressage talent and was sold to a farm in Ohio.

We also had the opportunity to lease a little chestnut broodmare. We produced a filly which we named Cyder Bay Sassafras. “Sassy” lived up to her name by performing in ladies and youth divisions winning Championships in futurity’s and classes at the Morgan World Show many times over in both harness and under saddle.

Although our Morgan breeding program was very small scale, we had an outstanding success rate.

An established 15+ year breeder remarked that we accomplished more in our first years than many others did over decades of breeding.

I accredit that to the extensive study and dedication that I put into every breeding. In the horse world there is a great amount of history available to research as well as the use of AI (artificial insemination) for stud selection.
Our goal was to always breed and sell the best!

Our time in the horse world was a wonderful ride! But eventually the showing expenses and show world politics became a bit crazy, so we decided to sell our show offspring.

My horses Cyder and Vintage remained with us until they both passed of old age on our farm.

Our Miniature Donkey Start

Our family was introduced to miniature donkeys when we attended the 1994 Horse A-Rama Horse Fair. They were adorable and the breed was very intriguing! I began to research as a potential new breeder using the same techniques used in my search for our morgans. I began digging for information on history, pedigree and conformation. I joined the ADMS and subscribed to the NMDA - Asset magazine. A year into my search we found a few jennets to purchase in early 1995.

Research always continued as we added new bloodlines to our small herd. Fortunately, we were able too use outside breeding until we found a jack worthy to purchase. My search took us 3 years before finding our first young jack, Sunset Acres Red Sunset, a direct LCR Valintino 50th son. He also carried a very nice historic dam line as well.

Discovering “Select” Miniature Donkey Sales

Through the Brayer magazine I spotted “The Hartman Donkey Sale”. intrigued I called for information. Although it did not work to attend that year, I look back at that as an educational opportunity sadly missed.

Soon after we noticed a new sale, the North American Select Sale in 1997 De Moines, IA. We were excited to attend to view donkeys consigned from farms located from many different states. At that time, it was not unusual to have 60+ lots to view. Being able to visually see the donkeys with the bloodlines I was researching, it quickly became apparent where various characteristics were coming from genetically. We could see which farms had our desired phenotype and by observing how these bloodlines were being crossed and noting what “was working” and “not working” saved time and easily pushed us steps ahead in our breeding program.

We branched out and started testing bloodlines and retained our favorites to build on genetically. I saw that we could find and purchase “quality donkeys” by attending these sales and also meet and talk with other breeders from all over the country at one convenient location. These select sales became our yearly get aways!

Cyder Bay Farm Overview

Our journey started with donkeys in 1994-1995, now in 2025 we come to a grand total of 30+ years dedicating our lives towards
breeding donkeys of quality conformation with stocky-wide-corect form. Having sought after trainability traits with show presence and performance talent.

With years of experience in the field of breeding and management practices of Equines in general. We were seeking to buy the best we could find all within the realm of preserving the true Mediterranean/Sardinian heritage within the American Miniature donkey breed.

Our donkey herd is the product of long hours of genetic research with tested bloodlines honing our genetic base. We found it
difficult to continue to show and leave the farm after the kids grew up. So, we concentrated on breeding and marketing quality show & breednig stock to other farms. Many went to win show champion & best of Breed titles and also produce the next generation of champions for other farms even in many other countries.

Our donkeys have been quality additions to herds across the USA along as in many other countries, and we are proud of our donkeys who are winning national honors at shows here in the US and across the world. We pride ourselves on producing quality donkeys for your breeding programs, your back yard & and the show ring. Our donkeys can do it all!

HomeYearling1

Above is a group of yearling jennets with two mature jennets to the far right, this was earlier into our breeding program!

Our goal is to produce a quality animal first, and although color and size are always secondary in our thoughts we have achieved a variety of sizes and lots of interesting colors to choose from.
Maintaining a healthy safe spacious environment is also a priority, along with feeding our animals properly. We feel that maintaining proper vitamin/mineral supplements along with grain (when needed) and quality hay types, as well as fresh water daily, pasture to run, good vet care, and gelding is all part of owning animals and being a responsible owner or breeder.

Individual care like that of proper hoof trimming, grooming, and training helps our donkeys become well mannered and well adjusted individuals.

If you are interested in Miniature Donkeys for pets or a possible “Fun” new business adventure.
Feel free to call for an appointment to visit our operation first hand and best of all meet some wonderful donkeys!
